STUDENT HANDBOOK
2008 - 2009
History
St. Elizabeth High School
was founded in 1940 by
the Right Reverend
Monsignor James M.
Grant, D.D. to provide
quality secondary school
education for students
in the Wilmington area.
Under the direction of
Reverend Francis
Desmond, the first
principal, and four
Benedictine Sisters, St.
Elizabeth's graduated 23
students in June 1944.
That
same year St.
Elizabeth's was
recognized by the
Delaware State
Department of Education
as a full academic high
school and in 1945
became a temporary
affiliate of the
Catholic University of
America until July,
1962, when the
affiliation was made
permanent. In 1960 St.
Elizabeth High School
was accredited by the
Middle States
Association of Secondary
Schools and Colleges
that accreditation was
renewed in 1970, 1980,
1990, 2000 & 2006.
For
over sixty years St.
Elizabeth's has served
the needs of the
Christian community by
providing the finest in
education for its young
men and women - an
education that will
equip them to assume a
meaningful role in civic
and religious life.
Schools in the Diocese
of Wilmington admit
students of any race,
color, national and
ethnic origin, handicap
and age to all the
rights, privileges,
programs and activities
generally accorded or
made available to
students in the schools.
Catholic schools seek,
however, primarily to
serve parents who want a
Catholic education for
any of their children.
