STUDENT HANDBOOK
2008 - 2009
Guidance
Department
Each student at St.
Elizabeth is assigned a
counselor responsible
for aiding him with any
problem he may encounter
- educational,
vocational, or personal.
In many cases this aid
will take the form of
directing the students
to the proper person to
handle their problem:
Dean of Studies, Dean of
Students, teacher, etc.
The counselor helps
the student get oriented
to the school, discusses
curriculum offerings,
and helps him to select
the subjects which will
enable him to achieve
his vocational goal. The
counselor also assists
him in his selection of
a college and helps him
become well rounded
educationally.
Counselors will give
students as much help
with personal problems
as they can. Sometimes,
however, it becomes
necessary for the school
to recommend and/or
require students to get
outside professional
help. Parents are always
consulted when it
becomes necessary to
take this action and
counselors can help
parents to choose
appropriate individuals
or agencies, which may
best offer help.
Upon enrollment in St.
Elizabeth High School,
parents are asked to
provide the school with
information on learning
disabilities that apply
to their child. The
names of all students so
identified are provided
to teachers at the
beginning of each school
year. Teachers may check
complete records and
evaluations in the
students' folders in the
Guidance Office.
Counselors are available
to help with
interpretation of
educationa1/psychological
evaluations.
Depending on a student's
specific disabilities,
various accommodations
may be possible:
preferential seating in
class, oral testing,
tape recording of class
lectures/discussions,
and extended testing
time. Parents and
students must be aware
that all recommendations
from physicians for the
optimal learning
environment of a
particular child may not
be able to be
implemented in this high
school. Students with
documented learning
disabilities should be
allowed extra time on
major tests or exams.
However, it is the
student's responsibility
to ask for the extra
time in advance and make
the appropriate
arrangements for
transportation home.
Coaches and club
moderators will be
flexible in cases where
diagnosed students
arrive late to practice
because of completing
tests.
