STUDENT HANDBOOK
2008 - 2009
Statement on Attendance
There
are 180 class days set by the Diocese/State of Delaware. Students are allowed no
more than 10 absences (illness or other emergencies). If a student misses more
than 10 days he/she may be required to attend a make-up session at the end of
the school year. Our first concern is the students' education and we want them
in school daily. If a student will be absent, a parent should call the Business
Office by 8:30 a.m. on that particular day, and the student should present a
note signed by a parent to the Business Office on the day he/she returns to
school. Phone calls and notes from siblings and friends are not acceptable.
The
following situations are
considered questionable:
1.
Frequent absence on test
days
2.
Frequent absence on
Monday/Friday, days
immediately preceding
or following school
holidays, or absence on
'special' schedule days
(color day, field day,
etc.)
The
Attendance Committee,
after considering the
reasons for absence
discovered as a result
of the interview, may
decide on some action:
1.
Require a physician's
note to explain future
absence. Failure to
provide such a note will
cause a student to be
prohibited from making
up work or receiving
credit for work missed.
2.
Require a parental
conference.
3.
Recommend that the
student attend summer
school (after 15
absences) or repeat the
year (after 20
absences).
Students can avoid most
questions concerning the
legitimacy of absence by
providing, to the
Dean/Assistant Dean of
Students on the day of
their return to school,
a physician's
certificate which lists
the specific dates on
which students were
unable to attend school
due to illness.
