SERVICE TRIPS 

Benedictine Christmas Program

Where does the program take place?  The program will take place at St. Gertrude's Monastery in Ridgely, Maryland.  St. Gertrude’s Monastery is home to the Benedictine Sisters of Ridgely, Maryland who staff SEHS.  The Sisters minister to the people on the Eastern Shore of Maryland in the Diocese of Wilmington.  The monastery is located on 500 acres of farmland about 1 1/2 hours from Wilmington.   

What is the program in which the students are involved?  Students will work at St. Martin's Barn, a thrift store and food closet that distributes toys and other Christmas items to the rural poor of the community.  The students on this trip will be helping St. Martin’s Barn set up for their annual Christmas toy distribution that takes place later that week.   

The trip will take place in December, two weeks prior to Christmas (date to be announced).  Lunch will be provided by the Benedictine Sisters. The group will return in the evening.

PHILADELPHIA SUMMER SERVICE TRIP-BOYS

Where does the program take place?  The program will take place at the St. Vincent DePaul Center in Philadelphia.  The St. Vincent DePaul Center is located in the Germantown section of Philadelphia at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Parish.   

What is the program in which the students are involved?  The students will live together in accommodations provided by the Vincentian Priests and the Daughters of Charity Sisters who run the St. Vincent DePaul Center.  The Vincentians and Daughters will organize our work in and around the Germantown neighborhoods during this time.  Students will be doing various tasks and work with a variety of non-profit organizations.  Some of the possible work sites are:

-Inn Dwelling:  This Habitat for Humanity-like organization rehabs dilapidated houses in the Germantown area for the community’s poor.

-St. Martin De Porres Grade School:  We will help at the school with manual labor that needs to be completed on school grounds and assist with their summer camp program.

-Whosoever Gospel Mission:  This center provides food and clothing to the poor.  Students will work in both the soup kitchen and thrift store.

-St. Catherine’s Infirmary:   This is a residence facility for elderly and infirmed Vincentian priests and brothers. 

-Euphrasia House:  This facility provides a safe haven and professional social services to women who want to make positive changes in their lives.  Students will interact with the women and do manual labor.

-Neighborhood Children:  When we are not at work sites, time will be spent playing and interacting with the neighborhood children around where we will live.

Who is eligible to apply to this program?  Male students currently in their Junior year are eligible.  This program will fulfill 30 service hours of the 60 hour requirement to graduate.  If space remains, Sophomores may apply.

When does the program take place?  The trip will take place in June 2009 (date to be announced).  The trip will be led by Mr. John Petruzzelli, Associate Principal, a veteran of over 40 service trips.

How is the program financed? St. Elizabeth's will finance a portion of this program. Students are asked to pay $100.00 to help cover the registration fee and other trip expenses. 

RIDGELY MARYLAND

Where does the program take place? The program, sponsored by Campus Ministry, will take place at St. Gertrude's Monastery in Ridgely, Maryland. The monastery is located on 500 acres of farmland on the Eastern Shore of Maryland about 1 1/2 hours from Wilmington.

What is the program in which the students are involved?  The students will live together in accommodations provided by the Benedictine Sisters of Ridgely, Maryland who run St. Martin's Ministries. St. Martin's Ministries involve: the Benedictine School for Exceptional Children (a school for the handicapped); St. Martin's Barn (a thrift shop and food closet for the rural poor); St. Martin's House (a transitional residence for homeless and abused women and their children); and the Benedictine's Motherhouse (home for elderly and infirmed sisters, many of whom served at St. Elizabeth High School). The students will work in the various ministries during the week. The director of the program is Sr. Catherine Higley, O.S.B.
