Sophomore Religion—Course Expectations
ContentSophomore religion is broken into two semester courses. In the Fall, the focus of the course will be on the Hebrew Scriptures. Students will examine salvation history beginning with Genesis and continuing through wisdom books. The textbook is entitled Journey Through the Old Testament. In the Spring, the course focus is on the Christian Scriptures. Students will study the New Testament as the fulfillment of the Old Testament promises. The textbook is entitled, Journey Through the New Testament. Students are encouraged to become living witnesses of the Gospel Message in our world today.
Grading PolicyGrades will be based on the following percentage scale: Class participation 10% Homework 10% Quizzes 20% Reports/Projects 20% Tests 40%
Prayer is key to personal and communal faith development. Each class will begin with prayer and a reading from the Rule of St. Benedict. One day per month students will participate in quiet meditation and journaling to enhance their spirituality.
Class participation is crucial! Student’s interaction, discussion, ideas, questions and input are welcomed and necessary to enhance the classroom experience.
Homework is a requirement! Students are expected to read assigned material and complete assignments to be handed in for credit. Students will receive a 50% penalty for work that is one day late. No credit will be given after that one-day period.
Quizzes (announced and unannounced) will be given throughout the quarter on assigned reading material.
Reports/Projects will be assigned per quarter based on scripture readings (Bible) and supplemental text (St. Benedict – Hero of the Hills).
Tests will be given at the completion of each textbook chapter.
Classroom Requirements
Students are expected to have the necessary textbooks, Bible, notebook, student handbook, loose-leaf, a folder and a pen (and pencil for tests).
Students are to abide by the “Student Code of Conduct” established in the St. Elizabeth Student Handbook.
Students are expected to take notes, complete assigned reading and homework, be prepared for quizzes and tests, and keep all returned work in a folder.
Students are responsible for all missed work when s/he is absent. Contact a classmate or see the teacher for class notes and assignments. Make-up tests (given for excused absences only) need to be made up on the first day the student returns from his/her absence unless other arrangements are made with the teacher. It is the student’s responsibility to see the teacher the day s/he returns from being absent to schedule the make up test.
Students in need of extra help or further instruction are welcomed and encouraged to see Sr. Colleen in the Campus Ministry office after school.
