STUDENT LEARNING SERVICES

Students with Learning Differences:

St. Elizabeth High School recognizes that all individuals learn differently. To that end, St. Elizabeth’s offers the service of a Student with a Learning Differences Counselor (SSD Services for Students with Differences).  The SSD Coordinator offers guidance, collates all appropriate documentation, teaches study skills strategies and acts as an academic coach for these students throughout their high school career.  The SSD Coordinator also acts as a liaison between the teacher, the student and the home to ensure that all appropriate accommodations that can be given by the school are available to all students who need such assistance in order to be successful.  The SSD Coordinator maintains a four year relationship with the students and is available to assist and mentor them in their academic pursuits.  For more information contact Mrs. Joanne Gibbons at 656-3369 ext. 3042 or jgibbons@viking.pvt.k12.de.us
.

Freshman Counseling:

St. Elizabeth High School is committed to assisting all Freshmen as they successfully transition into high school. The Freshman Counselor guides the Freshman class through their first high school academic year.  The Freshman Counselor holds quarterly meetings with Freshman-level teachers to discuss the academic and social progress of the students.  The Freshman Counselor also coordinates conferences between parents and teachers for students experiencing difficulty.  Lastly, the Freshman Guidance Counselor acts as a resource person for all Freshmen in the areas of academic, social, and emotional growth.  The Counselor utilizes the following teaching techniques to help in this development:

• Effective lesson plans taught in Guidance Class (one day a cycle)
• Directed discussions
• Individual conferences
• Guided meditation and relaxation exercises
• Current media and academic tools

Peer Tutors

St. Elizabeth High School provides a resource for students who need additional help in their fields of study.  An active program of Peer Tutoring is in place to supplement education beyond the classroom.  Student-to-student peer relationships help overcome learning barriers common in the early high school years.

Students enrolled in the Peer Tutoring program are partnered with tutors who have demonstrated academic excellence through National Honor Society, Honor Roll, Honors & AP Courses, and teacher recommendations.

Tutors reinforce basic success skills including study habits, time management, problem solving techniques, and teacher-student interactions.  They also help students with classroom lessons, homework assignments and test preparation.

The faculty moderator is Mr. Frank Bellomo and he can be contacted at:
