The
formal study of language
and literature derives
from and enhances our
understanding of human
communication in all of
its expressions. The
English Department
curriculum seeks to
develop students’
facility with language
arts through reading,
speaking, listening, and
viewing experiences that
incorporate critical
thinking, problem
solving, writing
process, personal and
creative expression,
cooperative learning,
research, and
utilization of
technology. Emphasis is
placed on reading,
frequent writing, and
the importance of clear
reasoning and
expression.
Courses acquaint
students with literary
works from a range of
periods, world authors,
and genres and develop
their ability to read
with a critical eye.
Students also cultivate
the skills of accurate
and effective expression
while building
familiarity with the
structure and function
of language. The department teachers seek
to encourage an
appreciation and
enjoyment of reading and
writing and to develop
life-long thinkers and
learners.
Students must take four
years of English. Honors
level classes are
available for the highly
motivated students.
Courses include
Introduction to
Literature, American
Literature, British
Literature, World
Literature, and AP
Literature and
Composition.
